This morning in that precious time between sleep and awake, a song came into my mind. The words and melody floated through my mind and even though I did not recognize it, it moved me. The words of the song were, “I couldn’t be me without you. I couldn’t be me without you. Together, forever, wherever we are, I couldn’t be me without you.”
There was something that resonated with me about the melody and yet I did not know what it was. I often have special moments during the sleep/awake period where great insights occur. I call these experiences downloads and they often come with a special message. I knew that if I stayed open to the message, it would come.
As my awake state overtook my dream state, I noticed the warmth of the bed. I looked across the room in the half-light and it bounced off the fireplace and the pictures on the mantle. In the distance, I heard a train rumbling by. I wanted more, so I loaded the dogs into the car and drove to the woods. Nature has a way of brining things to the surface.
I walked along the pathway and stayed focused on the moment. The sunlight sprang forward with oranges and yellows. The cool breeze bounced off my face. A flicker called for its mate in a distant tree. The dogs tail wagging. Life expressing itself.
Then, the words came into my mind again. I couldn’t be me without you, an old country and western song by Johnny Rodriguez. And then a voice whispered to me, “Thank you for being you.” With the voice came a full awareness of what it meant. Life, God, Consciousness, Brahman, Krishna, whatever you want to call it, was moving through me as me and expressing itself out into my reality, like a beam of sunlight shining on the world.
As I looked out across the field, everything appeared as an individual beam of light shining back at me, all of us blending into a Oneness expressing itself. This body/mind of mine was not mine, it was an instrument of the One so that it could express Itself in this moment. How could I have ever believed that I was this little unimportant thing with problems and suffering? How could I have ever felt an emptiness inside; lacking love and self-worth? How could Source ever express itself as anything other than perfection?
Scientific technology has shown that each cell of every individual; person, pet, plant, rock, emits a small amount of light, called biophotons. Even though we cannot see this light, the light is the cell itself and it projects itself out onto the world. What you see as another is actually the Light moving through the other and resonating with you, creating Life in the moment. This is what the Hindu word, Namaste, means. The Spirit in me recognizes the Spirit in You. God as you. God as me. God as all that is in Its expression of Life. All is perfect.
I remember the story that Byron Katie tells. She was at the hospital visiting a friend with cancer. After the visit, Katie got up to leave and her friend said, “I love you Katie.” Katie smiled and said, “When you come to love your cancer, you will love me.” She knew that cancer is also a perfect expression of Source.
Several years ago I was contacted by a fellow who said he was with the Truth About Cancer group. They were planning on creating another program about cancer in pets and wanted to know if I would like to participate in its creation. I thought for a minute and then I found myself saying, “I don’t know if cancer is actually a bad thing.” He politely said goodbye and I never heard back from them, although, as you may know, they did create the series.
Joseph Campbell, the famous mythologist and author, once described life like a spinning color wheel. The source white-light beam penetrates the color wheel and expresses itself as all of the colors of the rainbow, each with their apparent individuality. Yet, when you spin the wheel, all of the colors reemerge and the white light reveals itself again.
Relationships are the expression of that Oneness in your reality. You are the Oneness of the relationship, the white light that expresses itself in all the colors of your world. The heart to heart connection between you and your pet is that Oneness. Pet, person, relationship all as One. The feeling that opens your heart when you are with your pet is you expressing as person and pet. That heartfelt feeling is the Source of all relationships. Awareness of that connection in all relationships is Namaste, the Truth. It is up to you to be aware of that.
The last paragraph in the novella, A River Runs Through It, by Norman MacClean, reads, “Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”
